About Bettine
Bettine is an award-winning Dutch goat cheese brand founded in 1982 by farmer and cheese maker Johan at Bettinehoeve. The name 'Bettine' comes from old Dutch, meaning 'female goat'—a clever branding decision at a time when goat cheese was unpopular in the Netherlands and the phrase "unknown makes unloved" perfectly described consumer attitudes. What began with milk from just two goats has grown into an internationally renowned cheese company employing 140 people, while still maintaining its family-focused values. All Bettine fresh goat cheese products are made at two production sites in Etten-Leur, Netherlands, with no outsourcing to other companies—ensuring consistent quality and artisanal character. Bettine's dedication to excellence was validated at the prestigious Nantwich International Cheese Show in the UK, where their Bettine Grand Cru was voted the world's best goat cheese—selected by an expert jury from 2,140 entries. This global recognition reflects over four decades of cheese-making expertise. The cheese is known for its deliciously mild flavour and unique Dutch character. Naturally soft and fresh, Bettine goat cheese is rich in proteins and easily digestible—making it an excellent choice for those who find cow's milk cheese difficult to tolerate. All products are made from pasteurised milk following traditional Dutch cheese-making methods. The product range includes fresh goat's cheese, ripened varieties like Bettine No.3, semi-hard goat's cheese, organic options, and convenient salad varieties including the popular Bettine Pearls and pre-sliced formats. The brand's breakthrough came in 1990 through partnership with Albert Heijn, and international growth has been driven by the gently mild flavour that distinguishes Bettine from sharper goat cheeses. Available at UK supermarkets including Ocado, Bettine brings authentic Dutch goat cheese craftsmanship to British consumers.
