About Blue Turaco
Blue Turaco Coffee is the only coffee brand in UK retail that is owned by an African coffee farmer, championing 100% specialty robusta coffee from Uganda. Founded by Wycliffe, who began picking coffee at just 8 years old to pay for his school fees and food, the brand represents a revolutionary shift in how the coffee industry operates. Wycliffe's journey from child coffee picker to coffee farm owner and UK retail brand founder embodies the transformative power of the industry when it works fairly. Blue Turaco grows specialty grade robusta on Wycliffe's own farm alongside fellow smallholder farmers in Uganda, sourcing directly and paying farmers 30% more than traditional channels. What sets Blue Turaco apart is their mission to shift power dynamics in the coffee industry. This isn't just marketing—every purchase directly impacts Ugandan communities: 20p from every pack sold pays for 2 school lunches in Ugandan village schools. The coffee itself challenges everything consumers think they know about robusta. Unlike traditional robusta coffees that are often bitter, Blue Turaco's specialty blend delivers a smooth, satisfying experience with tasting notes of raisin, cocoa, and buttered toast. With strength rated 5/5 and double the caffeine of arabica, this medium roast coffee is grown at 1200-1600 metres altitude using washed and natural processing methods. Blue Turaco made history as the first African farmer-owned coffee brand to hit UK supermarket shelves, launching at 142 Waitrose stores in October 2023. The coffee is now available in ground and whole bean formats at Waitrose, Tesco, and Ocado—making ethically-sourced, farmer-owned specialty coffee accessible to British consumers.
