Butterfinger is an iconic American candy bar created in 1923 by Otto Schnering of the Curtiss Candy Company. The distinctive name emerged from a popularity contest—a Chicago man submitted "Butterfinger" inspired by sportscasters using the term to describe players who couldn't hold onto the ball. Over a century later, the crispety, crunchety, peanut-buttery bar remains an American confectionery legend. The bar features a unique layered crisp peanut butter core covered in a chocolatey coating. This flaky, crunchy texture sets Butterfinger apart from other peanut butter candies, creating the distinctive eating experience that has made it a favourite for generations. The current recipe uses runner peanuts roasted at the manufacturing plant and a higher percentage of cocoa and milk in the coating. After decades under Nestlé ownership (from 1990), Butterfinger was acquired by Italian chocolatier Ferrero SpA in 2018 for $2.8 billion as part of a major US confectionery acquisition. Ferrero reformulated the bar in 2019, removing preservatives like TBHQ and hydrogenated oils while upgrading packaging to maintain freshness. The brand now generates over $200 million in annual sales, growing 12% annually under Ferrero ownership. In the UK, Butterfinger bars are available through supermarkets and American candy specialists, offering British consumers a taste of this century-old American classic.
