About MacSween
Macsween of Edinburgh is Scotland's most celebrated haggis maker, a third-generation family business established in the 1950s when Charlie and Jean Macsween opened their butcher's shop in Edinburgh's Bruntsfield. Their 60-year-old recipes remain virtually unchanged, delivering authentic Scottish flavour. A true pioneer, Macsween invented vegetarian haggis in the 1980s for the opening of the Scottish Poetry Library - the world's first meat-free version of Scotland's national dish, approved by the Vegetarian Society in 1984. This innovation opened haggis to a whole new audience. The traditional haggis features lamb, beef, oats, onions, and spices in a recipe passed down through generations. Additional varieties include wild boar, venison, gluten-free, and Three Birds haggis. In 2013, Macsween became the only haggis to receive 3 Gold Stars at the Great Taste Awards. Today Macsween operates from the world's first dedicated haggis factory in Loanhead, Edinburgh (officially opened by HRH Prince Andrew), exporting to 7 international markets. Products are available year-round in Scotland and seasonally in England at Tesco and other major supermarkets.
