About Packington
Packington Free Range is a Staffordshire family farm with over 80 years of heritage, now run by fourth-generation farmers and brothers Rob and Alec Mercer. Based in Barton-under-Needwood, the farm has built a reputation for exceptional animal welfare and genuinely free-range poultry that roams on established English pastures. Alec Mercer introduced free-range chicken production in 2007, developing a low-density, welfare-focused system. Chicks arrive at just one day old and are nurtured in warm bedding with careful temperature control. From around three weeks old, they're strong enough to access the outdoor range, spending their days foraging on natural grasses and clovers with access to perches, shelters, and shade before returning to safety each evening. The farm's commitment to animal welfare has earned recognition from the RSPCA and Compassion in World Farming. Rob Mercer oversees the pig operation, rearing animals outdoors on lush green pastures for their entire lives rather than bringing them indoors to fatten. This ethical approach extends across all their products including free-range eggs. Packington demonstrates genuine sustainability through solar panels, bio-mass boilers, and participation in environmental schemes that prioritise regeneration and biodiversity. Their products are available through quality retailers like Ocado and independent butchers who value provenance and traceability in British farming.
