About Playmobil
Playmobil is a German toy brand produced by the Brandstätter Group (Geobra Brandstätter GmbH & Co KG), headquartered in Zirndorf, Germany. The company was founded in 1876 by Andreas Brandstätter in Fürth, Bavaria, originally producing ornamental fittings and locks before transitioning to plastic toys in 1954. Playmobil celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024. The signature Playmobil toy is a 7.5cm tall human figure with a characteristic smiling face, invented by German designer Hans Beck (1929-2009), known as the "Father of Playmobil". Beck spent three years from 1971 to 1974 developing the concept, basing the facial design on children's drawings: a large head, big smile, and no nose. The 1973 oil crisis made Playmobil viable as the company needed products requiring less plastic. Playmobil debuted at the 1974 International Toy Fair in Nuremberg with knights, Native Americans, and construction workers. A Dutch firm agreed to buy a whole year's production, and by year end the company achieved three million Deutschmarks in sales. Playmobil began selling worldwide in 1975, and by 2024 over 3.5 billion figures have been produced. The company employs more than 4,600 people with headquarters, development, and marketing in Zirndorf since 1990. The Playmobil FunPark opened in Zirndorf in 2000. Worldwide turnover reached 742 million Euros in 2019. Playmobil is known for premium-quality toys "made in Europe". Current themes include City Life, City Action, Country, Pirates, Dinosaurs, Castle, Farm, and licensed properties like Disney, Asterix, and Porsche. Sustainable ranges including Wiltopia, Organic Farm, and World of Horses are made from over 80% recycled and bio-based plastics. The toddler line, now called Playmobil Junior (formerly 1.2.3), uses up to 90% plant-based plastics.
