About Poons London
Poons London represents one of the most celebrated names in British Chinese cuisine, founded by William 'Bill' Poon who became the first Chinese chef to win a Michelin Star in 1980. Bill Poon, a seventh-generation Master Chef trained in Hong Kong and Macau, opened the first Poon's Restaurant in 1973 in a tiny 8-square-metre space in Lisle Street, Chinatown, that could only fit four tables. His commitment to authentic Cantonese cuisine quickly attracted a devoted following, with celebrities from Mick Jagger to Barbra Streisand dining at his establishments. At its peak, the Poon's empire included seven restaurants across London including the iconic Poon's of Covent Garden at King Street. After Bill and his wife Cecilia retired in 2006, their daughter Amy revived the family legacy in 2018 with critically acclaimed pop-ups before establishing Poon's at Somerset House. In 2021, Amy launched an award-winning range of signature Chinese sauces, bringing Poon's time-honoured family recipes into home kitchens. All four signature sauces have won Great Taste Awards and are now stocked at prestigious retailers including Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason, Harrods, Ocado, and Booths. The range has expanded to include new additions like Fermented Soybean Paste, Soybean Doubanjiang, and Everything Everywhere Sauce, alongside traditional wind-dried meats, Chinese sausages (lap cheong), and dumplings produced in partnership with Huls in Holland.
