About Sabra
Sabra is the world's leading hummus brand, founded in 1986 in Queens, New York by Zohar Norman and Yehuda Pearl as Sabra-Blue & White Foods. What began as a small operation has grown into a global phenomenon that revolutionised the refrigerated dips and spreads category and introduced millions to the pleasures of authentic hummus. The company's trajectory changed dramatically in 2005 when Israeli food manufacturer Strauss Group acquired a 51% stake for approximately $9 million. This partnership brought sophisticated manufacturing expertise and marketing capabilities that accelerated Sabra's growth across North America. In 2008, global giant PepsiCo joined through its Frito-Lay division, forming a 50/50 joint venture that would propel Sabra to unprecedented heights. With PepsiCo's distribution muscle behind it, Sabra expanded rapidly. In 2010, the company opened what was then the world's largest and most sophisticated hummus facility in Virginia, a LEED-certified green factory representing a $70 million investment. By 2016, Sabra had captured an extraordinary 60% market share of American hummus sales, approaching $1 billion in annual revenue. In 2024, PepsiCo completed its full acquisition of Sabra from Strauss Group for $244 million, making it a wholly-owned subsidiary. Today, Sabra remains the category leader with approximately 36% market share in the United States. In the UK market, Sabra hummus is distributed by Osem UK Ltd and available across major supermarkets including Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, and Ocado. The brand's authentic Middle Eastern recipes feature fresh vegetables, pulses, and tehina (sesame seed paste), delivering the smooth, rich, and flavourful hummus that has made Sabra a household name. UK shoppers can find Sabra's popular varieties including Houmous Extra with pine nuts and Mezze Garlic & Red Pepper, offering convenient and nutritious dipping options for any occasion.
