About Village Maid
Village Maid Cheese is a second-generation cheesemaking company based in the rural village of Riseley in Berkshire, producing award-winning artisan cheeses for almost 40 years. Founded by Anne Wigmore in 1986 after a decade working at the National Institute for Research in Dairying in Shinfield, where she learned her craft in their research dairy. The company produces five distinctive vegetarian artisan cheeses - Wigmore, Waterloo, Spenwood, Maida Vale, and Heckfield - each unique in style but incorporating traditional cheesemaking methods. Their excellence was confirmed in October 2023 when Wigmore was awarded Super Gold at the World Cheese Awards and selected by the Super Jury as one of the top 16 cheeses in the world. Village Maid sources the highest quality milk from local farmers, including Heckfield Home Farm situated less than two miles from their dairy. Heckfield is a certified biodynamic market garden and organic farm with 38 Guernsey cows, whose naturally carotene-rich milk gives cheeses like Waterloo and Heckfield their distinctive golden colour. All cheeses are made with vegetarian rennet. In February 2024, Village Maid acquired Two Hoots Cheese Ltd, adding the acclaimed Barkham Blue to their range. UK shoppers can find Village Maid's Waterloo and Maida Vale cheeses at Tesco, bringing world-class Berkshire artisan cheese to supermarket shelves.
