About Zendium
Zendium is a scientifically advanced toothpaste brand from Unilever that works differently to conventional oral care products. First introduced in the Netherlands in 1976, the formula is based on pioneering enzyme research by Henk Hoogendoorn and has since earned a devoted following, commanding approximately 37% market share in Denmark. The brand's unique approach focuses on boosting the mouth's natural salivary defences rather than simply adding more antibacterial agents. The Zendium formula contains a three-enzyme system (amyloglucosidase, glucose oxidase, and lactoperoxidase) combined with three protein components (lysozyme, lactoferrin, and immunoglobulin IgG). These ingredients promote beneficial oral bacteria while supporting oral immunity against harmful species. Unlike conventional toothpastes that often disrupt the oral microbiome, Zendium works to balance it, promoting an overall community shift towards bacteria associated with gum health. Clinical evidence supports Zendium's efficacy. In a 13-week controlled trial, 83% of Zendium users experienced improved gingival (gum) health, with results showing superiority against control products across all three clinical indices measured. A real-world Danish study of over 300 long-term users found significantly better gingival health compared to those using regular toothpastes. This scientific backing distinguishes Zendium from many claims-based oral care products. Importantly, Zendium is SLS-free, meaning it contains no sodium lauryl sulfate - the foaming agent in most toothpastes that can irritate the mouth's mucous membranes and may contribute to aphthous ulcers (mouth ulcers). This makes Zendium particularly suitable for those with sensitive mouths, including children. The Kids 0-5 formula available at UK supermarkets like Tesco brings this gentle, science-backed approach to young children's oral care.
