Armor All is America's most iconic car care brand, with origins dating back to 1962 when polymer chemist Joe Palcher discovered a groundbreaking formula in his garage that could protect rubber, plastic, and vinyl surfaces from UV radiation and ozone damage. Initially sold from 1966 under the name "Tri-don" (No Dirt spelled backwards), the product was acquired in 1972 by car enthusiast and marketing entrepreneur Alan Rypinski, who renamed it Armor All Protectant and began building what would become a household name. Rypinski's strategic marketing transformed Armor All from a niche product sold at specialty car shops in Southern California to a nationally recognised brand. Early distribution through the prestigious Briggs Cunningham Automotive Museum in Costa Mesa and Parnelli Jones tire stores established credibility with car enthusiasts, while advertising in periodicals like Hot Rod Magazine drove consumer awareness. In 1976, Rypinski officially patented the Armor All Protectant formula, followed by a 1979 patent for its exclusive infusion method, securing the brand's competitive advantage. Today, Armor All offers a comprehensive range of car care products manufactured by Armored AutoGroup from their Danbury, Connecticut headquarters. The product line extends far beyond the original protectant to include leather care wipes and conditioners, wheel and tyre cleaners, tyre foam for showroom shine, wash and wax car shampoos in various sizes, glass cleaners and wipes, multi-purpose interior cleaners, and accessories such as large microfibre drying towels. Products are available in both spray and convenient wipe formats for ease of use. The Armor All Protectant remains the brand's signature product, available in both gloss and matt finish options to suit different aesthetic preferences.
