About Bulmers
Bulmers is Britain's most iconic cider brand, founded in 1887 in Hereford, England by Henry Percival "H.P." Bulmer. What began with borrowed equipment and apples from his father's orchard has grown into the largest cider producer in the UK, responsible for 65% of all cider sold in Britain. The company's story is deeply rooted in Herefordshire—the heart of English cider country. In 1889, H.P.'s brother Fred joined the business, turning down a tutoring position for the children of the King of Siam. With a £1,760 loan from their father, the brothers built their first cider mill on an 8-acre field outside Hereford. A breakthrough came in the 1890s when Dr Herbert Durham, a college friend of Fred's, isolated a wild yeast to create the first pure cider yeast culture, revolutionising consistency in cider production. This scientific approach helped Bulmers grow rapidly, and by 1970 when shares were offered on the Stock Exchange, it was the world's largest cider producer. Bulmers Original continues to use 100% British apples, with approximately 90% of apples sourced locally from Herefordshire growers. The main production facility remains at Plough Lane in Hereford, where the majority of fermentation, processing and bottling takes place. In 2003, Scottish & Newcastle acquired Bulmers for £278 million. Following S&N's £7.8 billion acquisition by Carlsberg and Heineken in 2008, Bulmers became part of the Dutch Heineken group. Bulmers also owns Strongbow, another major global cider brand launched in 1960.
