About Carlsberg
Carlsberg is a Danish multinational brewer founded on 10th November 1847 by J.C. Jacobsen in Valby, Copenhagen. The name combines "Carl" (Jacobsen's son) with "bjerg" (Danish for hill), referencing the hill where the original brewery was established - still the location of Carlsberg's headquarters today. Jacobsen moved his father's brewery to Valby Bakke hill in 1847 to access cleaner brewing water, and the company has remained synonymous with quality Danish lager ever since. The first export began in 1868 with a single barrel shipped to Edinburgh, Scotland - the beginning of what would become a global empire. Known for pioneering brewing science, Jacobsen established the world's first industrial research laboratory in 1875, freely sharing discoveries including his famous yeast strains with competitors. This led to the founding of the Carlsberg Foundation in 1876, now one of the world's oldest industrial foundations and still the company's majority owner. Today, Carlsberg is the sixth-largest brewery in the world, employing around 41,000 people primarily across Europe and Asia. The UK range includes Carlsberg Danish Pilsner, Export Lager, and alcohol-free options - all embodying the brand's famous tagline: "Probably the best beer in the world."
