Denby Pottery Company is a prestigious British manufacturer of hand-crafted stoneware, founded in 1809 in the village of Denby, Derbyshire. Originally established on the estate of William Drury-Lowe as a manufacturer of stoneware bottles, the pottery has evolved over more than 200 years to become synonymous with quality tableware, earning its place as one of the UK's most respected homeware brands. The company's journey began under Joseph Jager and later the Bourne family, who consolidated operations at the Denby site in 1834. Throughout the nineteenth century, Denby produced practical salt-glazed stoneware including telegraph insulators, ink bottles, water filters, and spirit bottles. The shift towards decorative tableware began in the 1930s with Donald Gilbert's iconic designs like Cottage Blue, Manor Green, and Homestead Brown, followed by renowned mid-century pieces like Gill Pemberton's celebrated Chevron and Arabesque ranges. Today's Denby collections include Natural Canvas, Natural Denim, Halo, Imperial Blue, Azure, Greenwich, and Studio Craft, alongside the exclusive John Lewis collaboration Quartz Rose. Every piece is still handcrafted at the original Derbyshire pottery, with each item going through up to 20 pairs of hands during production. Denby stoneware is chip-resistant, dishwasher-safe, oven-safe, microwave-safe, and freezer-safe, backed by a 10-year guarantee against manufacturing defects. The Denby Group expanded in 2010 with the acquisition of Burleigh Pottery and in 2012 added Poole Pottery to its portfolio. The company holds the distinction of being the first UK tableware manufacturer to achieve 'zero to landfill' status for all process waste.
