About Dragon
Dragon is the flagship brand of South Caernarfon Creameries, Wales's largest dairy co-operative, with a proud heritage stretching back to 1938. Founded by John Owen Roberts who united 63 local farmers to brand and market their own milk, the company has grown over eight decades while staying true to its Welsh roots—processing only Welsh milk and featuring the Welsh language on every Dragon product. Based on the Llŷn Peninsula in North West Wales, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, South Caernarfon Creameries sits at the heart of a farming community. Their family-owned dairy farm co-operative members span North Wales, Mid Wales, and Ceredigion, ensuring authentic Welsh provenance in every block of cheese. The Dragon range offers Welsh Cheddar from mild and creamy through to vintage varieties matured on site for up to 18 months. Their signature innovation is the Welsh Slate Cavern Aged Cheddar, developed in partnership with Llechwedd Slate Caverns in Blaenau Ffestiniog. This traditional method sees cheese transported 500 feet underground to mature, resulting in a firmer body with rich, savoury depth. The range also includes classic territorial cheeses like Double Gloucester, Red Leicester, and Welsh Caerphilly. UK shoppers can find Dragon Welsh Cheddar at Iceland and other supermarkets, while the co-operative also supplies own-label cheese to major retailers. With export success including the US market, Dragon cheese brings authentic Welsh dairy heritage to tables worldwide.
