About Jules Destrooper
Jules Destrooper is Belgium's premier biscuit maker, founded in 1886 in Lo, West Flanders, by Jules Destrooper (1856–1934). What began as a shop selling imported colonial goods - coffee, tea, tobacco, spices, and chocolate - evolved into one of the world's most prestigious biscuit brands, now holding a royal warrant from the Court of Belgium. The brand is renowned for its butter waffles, known locally as "lukken," following a traditional recipe dating back to the 17th century when Belgian families baked their own. Jules Destrooper designed the distinctive shape of these butter crisps, made with pure butter according to a secret 19th-century recipe. The butter waffle has been granted the official trademark 'Regional Product of Westhoek' by VLAM, the Flemish Centre for Agriculture and Fishery Marketing. The famous Almond Thin was created as a promotional gift using real butter and fresh almonds. The Hotel Teirlinck in Lo loved them so much they began purchasing them for hotel guests, launching the product's commercial success. In 1950, Jules Destrooper began international exports, and today the brand reaches approximately 75 countries worldwide. Now owned by the Vandermarliere family's GT&CO holding company since 2015, Jules Destrooper continues its tradition of excellence. The Butter Crisp celebrated its 130th anniversary, and the Butter Crisp with Dark Chocolate was elected Best Product of the Year 2022–2023. UK shoppers can find these authentic Belgian biscuits at Tesco.
