About Kitkat
KitKat is an iconic chocolate-covered wafer bar created by Rowntree's of York in 1935 and now owned by Nestlé. With over 5 billion bars sold annually across 85 countries, KitKat is Nestlé's leading confectionery brand. The York factory still produces up to 4 million KitKat bars every day. The original four-finger bar was developed after a worker at Rowntree's York factory suggested "a chocolate bar that a man could take to work in his pack up." Launched in September 1935 as Rowntree's Chocolate Crisp for just £1,750 investment, it was renamed Kit Kat Chocolate Crisp in 1937. The two-finger version followed in 1936. The name KitKat has 18th-century origins - it was the name of a literary and political club that met in the pie shop of pastry cook Christopher Catling (Kit and Cat). Rowntree's registered the name as early as 1911. During World War II, milk shortages led to dark chocolate being used temporarily, and the wrapper changed from red to blue between 1945-1947. In 1957, Donald Gilles created the legendary advertising line "Have a Break, Have a Kit Kat" for JWT London. Following international success, Nestlé acquired Rowntree Mackintosh Confectionery in 1988 for $4.5 billion. In the US, KitKat is made under licence by the Hershey Company. The UK range includes the classic KitKat 2 Finger and 4 Finger bars, plus the chunkier KitKat Chunky introduced in 1999 with four larger wafer layers. Flavour variations include Dark Chocolate, White Chocolate, Orange, Hazelnut, Peanut Butter, Salted Caramel, Coffee, and seasonal specials like Gingerbread. Sharing bars come in Double Chocolate and Salted Caramel & Hazelnut varieties. KitKat is offered in over 300 diverse flavours worldwide, from UK favourites like hazelnut and salted caramel to exotic Japanese flavours like wasabi and matcha.
