About Lucozade
Lucozade is Britain's bestselling energy drink brand, with a remarkable history dating back to 1927. The drink was invented by William Walker Hunter in Newcastle as 'Glucozade'—a glucose and water solution created to help his sick daughter recover. Pharmacist William Owen's business developed the original formula, which was acquired by Beecham's in 1938 for just £10,000 and renamed Lucozade. For decades, Lucozade was sold in pharmacies as a recovery drink for the sick, famously delivered to hospital patients in its distinctive cellophane-wrapped glass bottle. The brand's transformation came in 1983 when it was repositioned from a medicinal tonic to a sports and energy drink with the clever slogan "Lucozade replaces lost energy." This rebranding was spectacularly successful—UK sales tripled between 1984 and 1989. The ownership journey continued through SmithKline Beecham (1989) and GlaxoSmithKline (2000), before Japanese beverage giant Suntory acquired Lucozade and Ribena from GSK in 2013 for £1.35 billion. The brand is now manufactured by Lucozade Ribena Suntory Limited, part of Suntory Beverage & Food Europe, at the Royal Forest Factory in Coleford, Gloucestershire. Today's Lucozade range spans three key sub-brands: Lucozade Energy (the classic glucose drink in Original, Orange and other flavours), Lucozade Sport (isotonic sports hydration), and Lucozade Alert (high-caffeine with vitamin B3). The 2024 'Blucozade' launch—Blue Burst, Blue Force and Blue Rush across all three ranges—was described as "the biggest Lucozade launch ever."
