About Mattel
Mattel, Inc. is an American multinational toy manufacturing company headquartered in El Segundo, California, founded in 1945 by Harold Matson and Ruth and Elliot Handler. As the world's second largest toy maker (after the Lego Group), Mattel products are sold in over 150 countries with operations in 35 territories. The company's crown jewels are Barbie (launched 1959, became a cultural phenomenon and billion-dollar franchise with the 2023 film) and Hot Wheels (launched 1968, iconic die-cast cars with signature orange track). Both were named top global toy properties by NPD Group in 2020-2021. Mattel's extensive brand portfolio includes Fisher-Price (preschool), American Girl, Thomas & Friends, UNO (card games), Masters of the Universe, Matchbox, Monster High, Polly Pocket, Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, and Pictionary. The 1997 acquisition of Tyco Toys added Matchbox and ViewMaster to the portfolio. In the UK, Mattel products are available at major toy retailers, supermarkets, and online. The company continues expanding through entertainment content, with upcoming films including a Hot Wheels movie produced by J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot.
