About Mikasa
Mikasa is a globally recognised tableware brand founded by Japanese American entrepreneur George Tetsuo Aratani. He established the company as 'American Commercial Inc.' in California in 1948, initially importing goods from Japan. After partnering with Alfred Funabashi, the company focused on Japanese porcelainware and was renamed Mikasa in the 1950s, with the brand officially established in December 1957. From its origins as a dinnerware importer, Mikasa grew into a major wholesaler supplying prestigious retailers including Bloomingdale's, Macy's, and May Department Stores. The 1970s saw significant diversification as the company added crystal stemware, stainless flatware, crystal gifts, picture frames, ceramic vases, table linens, and decorative accessories to complement its successful dinnerware lines. Mikasa's business model is distinctive - rather than owning manufacturing facilities, the company contracts its designs to approximately 175 factories across 25 countries. Historically, around 30% of production was concentrated in Germany and Austria. The company also created sub-brands including Studio Nova (around 40% less than Mikasa) and Home Beautiful for mass merchants. British shoppers can find Mikasa dinnerware and tableware at UK supermarkets. The brand is recognised worldwide as a leader in tabletop fashion, offering everything from everyday dinnerware to elegant entertaining pieces and barware.
