About Morland
Morland is a historic English brewery founded in 1711 when farmer John Morland set up a brewery in West Ilsley, Oxfordshire. The brewery grew substantially, acquiring local competitors and moving to Abingdon in the 1860s. By 1944, it had reverted to the Morland name after operating as United Breweries. Morland's most famous creation is Old Speckled Hen, first brewed in 1979 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the MG car factory in Abingdon. The name comes not from a bird, but from an old paint-spattered MG Featherlight Saloon that was parked outside the factory paint shop, affectionately known as the 'Owld Speckl'd Un'. What began as a one-off celebration brew proved so popular that a second batch was immediately required. Old Speckled Hen was relaunched as draught in 1990 with considerable success. In 2000, Morland was acquired by Greene King, and production moved to Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, though the traditional recipes were preserved. Today the Morland range includes Old Speckled Hen, Old Crafty Hen (a stronger oak-aged vintage ale), and Old Golden Hen. These classic British ales continue the 300-year brewing heritage.
