About OPI
OPI (O·P·I) is an American nail polish manufacturer headquartered in Calabasas, California, widely regarded as one of the world's leading professional nail care brands. The company began as Odontorium Products, Inc., a dental supply company based in Los Angeles, until George W. Schaeffer acquired it in 1981 and pivoted to professional nail products after noticing nail technicians purchasing acrylics for nail enhancements. Schaeffer partnered with his sister-in-law Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, known as the "First Lady of Nails," and biochemist R. Eric Montgomery to create an innovative acrylic system. In 1989, Weiss-Fischmann launched OPI's flagship nail lacquer line, starting with 30 richly pigmented shades that would set the standard for professional-quality nail colour. Weiss-Fischmann, a Hungarian-American who grew up in communist Hungary and came to the United States as a teenager, played a crucial role in OPI's brand development, including creating the brand's famously playful colour names. Her influence helped establish OPI as a salon favourite trusted by nail professionals worldwide. OPI was acquired by Coty Inc. in 2010 for approximately $1 billion. In December 2020, Coty sold its stake in OPI along with Wella, Clairol, and ghd to KKR for $2.5 billion, making OPI part of the standalone Wella Company. Products are now manufactured in North Carolina, having relocated from Hollywood, California in 2016. The brand is renowned for its extensive colour range, high-quality formulations, and clever colour names that often reference pop culture, travel destinations, and current trends. OPI remains the nail polish of choice for professional salons and beauty enthusiasts alike.
