About Paperchase
Paperchase is an iconic British stationery brand founded around 1968 by art students Judith Cash and Eddie Pond. For over five decades, the brand championed design-led stationery, notebooks, greeting cards and gifts, building a loyal following among those who appreciated beautiful, creative paper products. At its peak, Paperchase operated internationally across the UK, Continental Europe, USA and UAE. The brand's journey saw various owners including WH Smith investment (1985), a management buyout with Graphite Capital (1996), and Borders Inc. acquisition (2004). Following Borders UK closure in 2009, Paperchase found space in HMV and Waterstones stores. A 2016 boom led to aggressive expansion and £50 million investment, but economic uncertainty and increased competition caused profits to plummet by nearly 50%, from which the brand never recovered. After entering administration on 30 January 2023, Tesco purchased the Paperchase brand and intellectual property, saving this well-loved name from disappearing entirely. Although all 106 standalone stores closed by April 2023 and 900 staff were made redundant, Paperchase products relaunched in 120 Tesco stores in October 2023, bringing the brand to supermarket shoppers nationwide. Today's Tesco Paperchase range includes notebooks, journals, greeting cards, gift wrap, stationery sets and desk accessories—maintaining the design-led aesthetic that made Paperchase a high street favourite.
