About Punjana
Punjana is Northern Ireland's best-selling tea brand, produced by the Belfast-based Thompson's Tea company. The Thompson family has been blending tea since 1896 when Robert S. Thompson became a partner of McArthur and Willis, making this one of the oldest family-owned tea companies in the UK. The Punjana brand was created in the early 1950s by second-generation James Thompson and his wife Lillias. The distinctive name was inspired by the word "Punjab" seen etched on the famous Gillespie statue in Comber, County Down. What began as a local favourite has grown into an iconic brand, with over one million cups of Thompson's Punjana enjoyed every single day in Northern Ireland alone. Punjana's signature taste comes from a carefully crafted blend of the finest Assam and Kenyan teas. The beautifully rounded, malty character of leaves grown in Assam's finest gardens is complemented by the light, bright flavour of leaves from the foothills of Mount Kenya. This distinctive blend has earned Punjana recognition from the prestigious Guild of Fine Foods for a record 12 consecutive years, including their highest accolade of 3 Gold Stars at the Great Taste Awards. Punjana stands alone in its category, having won more Great Taste Awards than any other blended teabag in the UK and Republic of Ireland over the past decade. Beyond Northern Ireland, it has become one of the most popular tea brands in Scotland. Now in its fourth generation of Thompson family leadership, the company continues its passionate commitment to quality tea blending that began over 125 years ago.
