About RSPB
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is Britain's largest and most influential nature conservation charity, with origins dating back to 1889. Founded by pioneering women Emily Williamson and Eliza Phillips who united their protest groups to campaign against the Victorian fashion for decorating hats with exotic bird feathers, the organisation began as an all-female membership society fighting for wildlife protection. Originally called the Society for the Protection of Birds, the organisation received Royal Charter status in 1904. Their first major legislative success came in 1921 with the Importation of Plumage (Prohibition) Act. Conservation has remained central - in 1930 they purchased their first nature reserve, and by 1947 had helped bring the avocet back from UK extinction at their Minsmere reserve. The avocet became the RSPB's iconic logo. Today, the RSPB manages over 200 nature reserves protecting Britain's most important habitats. With 1.1 million members including 195,000 youth members, 2,517 employees and 13,500 volunteers, they generated £169 million in 2023/24. As a partner of BirdLife International, the RSPB is Europe's largest wildlife conservation organisation, advocating for nature at the highest levels of government.
