About Silentnight
Silentnight is the UK's biggest bed manufacturer and an acknowledged Superbrand, founded on 11 July 1946 by Tom Clarke in Skipton, Yorkshire. Using his Royal Navy gratuity after being demobbed, Clarke and his wife Joan started Clarke's Mattresses, which grew into the British bedding institution that remains headquartered in Lancashire to this day. The company's success with high-quality, affordable beds and mattresses led to a move to Barnoldswick in 1949 to accommodate growing demand. In 1951, the company rebranded as Silentnight Limited, a name that would become synonymous with British bedding excellence. They've occupied their current Barnoldswick premises since 1961. In 1986, Silentnight introduced their beloved Hippo and Duck mascots, creating one of the most enduring advertising partnerships in British television history. These anthropomorphic characters captured the public imagination and helped cement Silentnight's position as the UK's leading bed brand during the 1980s, 2000s, and 2010s. Today, it's estimated that 1 in 5 people in the UK sleep on a Silentnight pillow, testament to the brand's reach across British bedrooms. While ownership changed in 2011 when HIG Europe rescued the company from receivership, Silentnight continues manufacturing beds, mattresses, pillows, and duvets in Lancashire, maintaining its commitment to quality British craftsmanship established nearly 80 years ago.
