About Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) is one of the most successful entertainment franchises in history, following Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo - four anthropomorphic turtle brothers trained in ninjutsu who fight evil in New York City. Created by comic book artists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in 1984, TMNT has generated over $6 billion in merchandise sales worldwide. The franchise became a merchandising phenomenon in the late 1980s, with Playmates Toys producing around 400 action figures and dozens of vehicles and playsets between 1988 and 1997. Sales reached $1.1 billion in just four years, making Turtles the third-bestselling toy figures ever at the time, behind only G.I. Joe and Star Wars. By 1994, TMNT was the most merchandisable franchise in existence. Nickelodeon acquired the complete TMNT franchise rights from Peter Laird in 2009 for $60 million, launching a hugely successful CGI-animated series in 2012 that became the number-one action figure property in 2013. The franchise continues to thrive with new animated series including Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the 2023 film Mutant Mayhem.
