About Thermos
Thermos is the original vacuum flask brand with over 115 years of pioneering insulation technology. The story begins in 1892 when Scottish scientist Sir James Dewar invented the vacuum flask for cryogenics research, creating a double-walled glass container with evacuated air between the walls. German glass blower Reinhold Burger and partner Albert Aschenbrenner commercialised Dewar's invention with a protective metal casing. In 1904, a naming competition produced "Thermos"—derived from the Greek word "thérmē" meaning heat. Thermos GmbH was officially formed in Germany in 1906, and American businessman William B Walker founded The American Thermos Bottle Company in Portland, Maine on January 31, 1907, later establishing a major plant in Norwich, Connecticut. A pivotal moment came in 1978 when Japanese company Nippon Sanso developed the world's first stainless steel vacuum bottle. In 1989, Nippon Sanso acquired Thermos operations in Japan, UK, Canada, and Australia, combining their advanced technology with Thermos's heritage brand. This innovation made vacuum flasks lighter, more durable, and more effective. Today Thermos remains the trusted leader in insulated containers—from travel mugs and vacuum flasks to food jars and lunch systems. The brand became so iconic that "thermos" was declared a generic trademark in the US in 1963. Compare Thermos prices on Grocefully across UK supermarkets.
