About Wasa
Wasa (Wasabröd) is the world's largest manufacturer of crispbread, founded in 1919 in Skellefteå, Sweden. For over a century, the company has been producing authentic Scandinavian-style knäckebröd (crispbread) that has become a staple in Swedish homes and gained international recognition. The brand name Wasa originates from one of their original products, Vasaknäcke, which featured an image of King Gustavus Vasa on the packaging. This heritage branding reflects the deep Swedish roots of the company and its role in Scandinavian food culture. Since 1999, Wasa has been owned by Italian food giant Barilla Alimentare S.p.A., following earlier ownership by Swiss pharmaceutical company Sandoz (later Novartis) from 1983. Production takes place in Sweden and Germany, with the Filipstad bakery in Sweden employing 310 people and producing 33,000 tonnes of crispbread annually. The UK range includes traditional Swedish varieties such as Husman (hearty rye crispbread with a robust flavour), Frukost (seeded wheat crispbread with poppy seeds, ideal for breakfast), and specialty options like Kanel (cinnamon crispbread). The focus remains on simple, wholesome ingredients with an emphasis on whole grains and rye. Wasa crispbreads are available in the UK through supermarkets like Ocado and specialist Scandinavian food retailers such as ScandiKitchen. Prices typically range from £2.60-2.80 per pack. About 80% of Wasa's production is exported outside Sweden, testament to the global appeal of their healthy, fibre-rich crackers. They offer an excellent base for open sandwiches, topped with cheese, cold cuts, or the classic Swedish combination of butter and pickled herring.
