About Aptamil
Aptamil is the UK's leading baby formula brand, produced by Nutricia as part of the Danone family. The brand's heritage traces back to 1885 when German professor Alexander Backhaus developed a technique to create formula closer to human breast milk by removing casein and retaining easily digestible whey proteins. Nutricia itself was established in the Netherlands in 1896 by brothers Jan and Martinus van der Hagen, earning the nickname "The Wet Nurse of The Netherlands." Danone acquired Nutricia through their €12.3 billion purchase of Numico in 2007, bringing together Aptamil, Cow & Gate, and Milupa under one roof. Today, Danone is the UK's largest baby formula company, and Aptamil is the country's number one brand for follow-on milks, backed by over 50 years of research into early life nutrition. The Aptamil range is organised by age stages: First Infant Milk (from birth), Follow On Milk (6-12 months), and Toddler/Growing Up Milks (1-3 years). The Advanced range represents Aptamil's most sophisticated formulation, featuring GOS, FOS and 2FL—the only UK follow-on milk with this combination—plus 50% more prebiotics than other UK/Irish follow-on milks. Specialised products include Aptamil Pepti (for cow's milk protein allergy with extensively hydrolysed proteins) and Aptamil Comfort (for colic and digestive issues with partially hydrolysed protein and reduced lactose). In January 2024, Danone reduced Aptamil prices following the CMA's report on formula market competition. Prices vary significantly between retailers—always compare before buying.
