About Ben And Jerrys
Ben & Jerry's is an iconic American ice cream brand founded in 1978 by childhood friends Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. The two met in seventh grade gym class in Merrick, New York in 1963, and after completing a $5 correspondence course in ice cream-making from Penn State University, they opened their first scoop shop in a renovated gas station in Burlington, Vermont with just $12,000 investment ($4,000 borrowed). From a single parlor, Ben & Jerry's grew into a multinational brand known for creative flavours and social activism. The company pioneered the chunky ice cream category—they claim to be the first to mass-produce Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough (launched 1991 after a customer suggestion). Their headquarters remain in South Burlington, Vermont, with the factory in Waterbury. In 1979, they started the annual Free Cone Day tradition. In April 2000, Ben & Jerry's was acquired by British multinational Unilever for $326 million. A unique acquisition agreement created an independent Board of Directors to preserve the brand's social mission, integrity and product quality. Both founders remained employed though not in operational roles. The brand is now available in 33 countries. In 2025, Unilever divested its ice cream business creating The Magnum Ice Cream Company (TMICC). Popular UK flavours include Cookie Dough (vanilla ice cream with cookie dough chunks), Phish Food (chocolate ice cream with fudge fish and marshmallow), Half Baked (chocolate and vanilla with brownie pieces and cookie dough), Chocolate Fudge Brownie, and Cherry Garcia. The non-dairy range now uses an oat milk base (reformulated Spring 2024), with several flavours including Phish Food certified gluten-free.
