About Bio D
Bio-D is a pioneering British eco-friendly cleaning brand founded in Hull in 1989 by Michael Barwell. For over 35 years, the company has been creating sustainable household cleaning products using ethically-sourced, entirely plant-based ingredients, all manufactured at their solar-powered factory in East Yorkshire. The inspiration behind Bio-D came from Barwell's alarming discovery while working on commercial ships: the hazardous chemicals requiring heavy-duty safety equipment like respirators were the same ingredients found in everyday household cleaners. This revelation drove him to create safer alternatives that protect both people and the planet without compromising on effectiveness. Bio-D's commitment to sustainability has earned prestigious recognition. In 2022, they became the first business in Hull to achieve B Corporation Certification, a global standard recognising companies that balance profit with purpose. In 2024, Bio-D received a King's Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development, cementing their position as leaders in ethical cleaning products. All Bio-D products are approved by Cruelty Free International and the Vegan Society, and are free from synthetic chemicals, preservatives, enzymes, and artificial perfumes. The company works with the University of Hull on sustainability measurement and remains committed to keeping products affordable, refusing to "price out" customers who want or need ethical cleaning solutions.
