About Branston
Branston is one of Britain's most iconic food brands, best known for Branston Pickle - first made in 1922 in the village of Branston near Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire by Crosse & Blackwell. The unique tangy recipe has remained largely unchanged for over 100 years, with over 17 million jars sold annually in the UK. The Branston factory was established in 1921 when Crosse & Blackwell purchased a 150-acre site pledging to create "the largest and best equipped food preserving plant in the British Empire". Production began in 1922, employing about 600 people. The brand passed through Nestlé ownership from 1960, then Premier Foods from 2004, before Japanese food manufacturer Mizkan Group acquired Branston in 2013 for £92.5 million. Branston Pickle contains vegetables in variable proportions (52%) including carrot, swede (rutabaga), onion, and cauliflower, combined with barley malt vinegar, date paste, and spices. Available as Original chunky, Small Chunk for easier spreading, and Smooth pureed varieties, plus convenient squeeze bottles. The pickle is suitable for vegans. In October 2005, Branston Baked Beans launched to challenge Heinz's dominance of the UK baked bean market. Branston Beans contain 51% beans and 38% tomatoes, are high in fibre and protein, low in fat, gluten-free, free from artificial colours and preservatives, suitable for vegetarians, and count as one of your five a day per half can. The wider Branston range includes piccalilli, brown sauce (with fruity flavour), tomato ketchup, mayonnaise, and salad cream - all featuring that essential Branston 'tang'.
