About Carmex
Carmex is one of America's most beloved lip care brands, invented in 1937 by Alfred Woelbing in his Wauwatosa, Wisconsin kitchen. After losing his job as a department store buyer during the Great Depression, Woelbing drew on his experience with cosmetics and pharmaceuticals to create a formula that would soothe his own chapped lips. He knew immediately he had something special. The early days were charmingly humble. Alfred hand-filled each opal glass jar, carefully sealed it with a black lid and applied paper labels. He sold his creation from the boot of his car for just 29 cents. Production paused during World War II when lanolin, a key ingredient, was requisitioned by the Army for rust protection on military equipment. After the war, Alfred resumed making batches in a 12-quart pot on his home hot plate. The family business evolved when Alfred's son Don joined in 1973, cleverly repurposing a Bunn coffee maker into a pouring machine - ending nearly 40 years of hand-pouring. In 1976, Carma Laboratories relocated to Franklin, Wisconsin, where production continues today. Alfred Woelbing's dedication was legendary - he drove to the office daily until suffering a stroke at 97, and continued visiting weekly until his death at 100 in 2001.
