About Costa Coffee
Costa Coffee was founded in London in 1971 by Italian brothers Bruno and Sergio Costa, who had emigrated from Parma in the 1950s. Starting as a wholesale roasting operation supplying Italian coffee shops, Costa opened its first retail store on Vauxhall Bridge Road in 1981. The distinctive Mocha Italia blend—a signature mix of slow-roasted Arabica and Robusta beans—remains the foundation of Costa's coffee. Whitbread acquired Costa in 1995 and expanded it into Britain's largest coffee chain. In January 2019, The Coca-Cola Company purchased Costa for £3.9 billion ($4.9 billion), marking Coca-Cola's first major move into the hot beverage market. Today, Costa operates over 2,800 stores in the UK and Ireland, plus 1,100+ internationally across 45 countries, making it the world's second-largest coffeehouse chain. The Costa At Home range brings coffee shop quality to UK supermarkets. Products include Tassimo-compatible pods (Latte, Cappuccino, Americano), Nespresso and Dolce Gusto compatible capsules, whole bean Signature Blend, roast and ground coffee for cafetières, and ready-to-drink chilled coffees. The Barista Creations range offers indulgent flavours like Millionaires Mocha and Salted Caramel Latte. Exclusive varieties for Tesco include Brazilian Blend Ristretto and Colombian Character Roast. Costa is famous for its slow-roasted beans, prepared at the Roastery in Lambeth, London, and for its consistent, rich espresso-based drinks. The brand offers Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee across its entire range.
