About Fishermans Friend
Fisherman's Friend is Britain's iconic menthol lozenge brand, still made in Fleetwood, Lancashire where it was created by pharmacist James Lofthouse in 1865. Originally developed as an extremely strong liquid remedy containing menthol and eucalyptus oil for deep-sea fishermen suffering respiratory problems in harsh northern fishing conditions, Lofthouse later converted it into portable lozenges. The fishermen began calling them their "friends" - hence the name. Under Doreen Lofthouse's leadership from 1963, the brand expanded globally with distinctive red and black packaging. Today, 5 billion lozenges are manufactured annually, with 97% exported - making it the UK's biggest food brand export to Germany. The range has grown from Original Extra Strong to include Aniseed (1977), Cherry, Mint, and sugar-free varieties - Lofthouse was the first UK company to produce sugar-free mints in 1979. Winner of three Queen's Awards for Export. Compare Fisherman's Friend prices at Grocefully across UK supermarkets.
