About Lavazza
Lavazza is Italy's favourite coffee brand, founded in Turin in 1895 when Luigi Lavazza opened an artisanal coffee roastery in the city's historic centre. His revolutionary innovation was creating the first coffee blends for consumption—using his chemistry studies to combine beans for more balanced, complex flavours rather than selling single-origin coffee as was standard at the time. The company's breakthrough came in 1930 with Qualità Oro, a masterful blend that became a symbol of Italian coffee excellence and remains a bestseller today. As espresso machines grew popular in 1930s Italy, Lavazza pioneered blends specifically tailored for espresso preparation. Luigi founded Luigi Lavazza SpA in 1927, building a family business now run by the third and fourth generations. Lavazza established its London subsidiary in 1990 to bring authentic Italian coffee culture to Britain, and operates a flagship store in London's heart. The brand imports beans from Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Honduras, Uganda, Indonesia and Mexico, creating over a dozen distinct blends. In 2015, Lavazza even reached space—partnering with the Italian Space Agency to develop ISSpresso, the first coffee machine on the International Space Station. Today, 16 million of Italy's 20 million coffee-buying households choose Lavazza. The UK range includes ground coffee (Qualità Rossa, Qualità Oro, Crema e Gusto), whole beans, espresso pods and Nespresso-compatible capsules.
