About Malt O Meal
Malt-O-Meal is a historic American cereal brand founded in 1919 by John Campbell in Owatonna, Minnesota. Originally created as a flavourful hot wheat and malted barley breakfast cereal to compete with Cream of Wheat, the brand has evolved into one of America's most popular value cereal producers, now part of Post Consumer Brands. John S. Campbell, who grew up in a milling family, wanted to create a hot breakfast cereal with more flavour than the bland options available. His formula combining wheat farina and malted barley became Malt-O-Meal, initially produced in an old creamery building before moving to larger facilities in Northfield, Minnesota, where production continues to this day. In 1965, Malt-O-Meal expanded into ready-to-eat cereals, and in 1966 pioneered the innovative bagged cereal format that uses less packaging, creates less mess, and keeps cereal fresher longer. This became the brand's signature, offering familiar cereal styles at more affordable prices. Popular varieties include Marshmallow Mateys (similar to Lucky Charms), Tootie Fruities, and Toasty O's. In 2015, Post Holdings acquired MOM Brands (Malt-O-Meal's parent company) for $1.15 billion, making Malt-O-Meal part of Post Consumer Brands - America's third-largest cereal company. The brand celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2019, proving its enduring appeal to American families seeking quality cereals at value prices.
