About Oxo
Oxo is one of Britain's most iconic food brands, with a history dating back to 1840 when Justus von Liebig invented concentrated meat extract. The name 'Oxo' (presumably derived from 'ox') was trademarked in 1899 by Liebig's Extract of Meat Company for a more affordable version of their beef extract. The revolutionary Oxo cube was introduced in 1910, transforming British cooking by making rich stock accessible to every household. During World War I, Oxo supplied 100 million cubes to British armed forces—all hand-wrapped individually—becoming a vital part of military rations. In 1908, Oxo became the original commercial sponsor of the Olympic Games at London, pre-dating Coca-Cola's claim. The brand became synonymous with British family life through the beloved 'Oxo Family' television advertisements (1983-1999) starring Lynda Bellingham. The brand passed through several owners: Vestey Group acquired it in 1924, Unilever bought it via Brooke Bond in 1984, Campbell Soup Company purchased it in 2001, before Premier Foods acquired all UK operations in 2006. Oxo cubes are still manufactured at the Worksop plant in Nottinghamshire. Today's Oxo range includes stock cubes (Beef, Chicken, Lamb, Vegetable), convenient Stock Pots with smooth melt-in texture, Reduced Salt variants with 25% less sodium, dried gravy granules, herbs and spices, and 10-minute marinades. All Oxo stocks are gluten-free. Whether making a Sunday roast gravy, hearty stew or risotto base, Oxo remains the go-to flavour enhancer in British kitchens.
