About Pink Lady
Pink Lady is the world's first trademarked apple brand, created by British-born plant breeder John Cripps at Western Australia's Department of Agriculture. In 1973, Cripps had the ingenious idea to cross a Golden Delicious with a Lady Williams apple. After planting 108,000 crossed seedlings and years of tasting trials, he selected the winning variety in 1984. The name "Pink Lady" was chosen by John Cripps himself, inspired by the pink gin cocktail drunk by the hero in Nicholas Monsarrat's novel "The Cruel Sea." Launched commercially in 1991, Pink Lady became the world's first apple 'brand' with the distinctive heart-shaped logo registered in 1998. By 2018, the brand had achieved US$1.3 billion in global retail sales and is listed among the top 100 greatest Australian inventions. The first shipment of Pink Lady apples reached UK shelves in 1992, and within 20 years the variety had overtaken Granny Smith to become the UK's third most popular apple by value. Following climate change making UK growing viable, over 300,000 Pink Lady trees were planted in Britain from 2019, with British-grown Pink Lady apples going on sale in 2022. Pink Lady apples are known for their distinctive pink blush over golden skin, sweet-tart flavour, and satisfying crunch.
