About Piz Buin
Piz Buin is the pioneering Swiss suncare brand that literally invented modern sun protection. In 1938, young chemistry student Franz Greiter suffered severe sunburn while climbing the 3,312-metre Piz Buin mountain in the Eastern Alps. This painful experience inspired him to develop 'Gletscher Crème' (Glacier Cream) in 1946, one of the first effective modern sunscreens, working alongside his wife Marga, a trained beautician. Greiter's contribution to sun safety extends beyond creating sunscreen - he invented the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) rating system in 1962, which became the worldwide standard by 1974. The original Glacier Cream had an SPF of just 2. In the 1970s, Piz Buin pioneered the incorporation of both UVA and UVB filters, establishing the brand as true innovators in sun protection science. With over 75 years of heritage and headquarters in Zug, Switzerland, Piz Buin offers specialist ranges for different needs: Moisturising for everyday protection, Allergy for sensitive skin, Mountain for high-altitude skiing with cold wind barriers, Tan & Protect for those wanting to enhance their tan safely, and After Sun products including hyaluronic acid formulas.
