About Princes
Princes is a British canned food brand with roots dating to 1880, when William Muirhead Simpson and Frank Roberts founded a partnership importing tinned lobster from Canada. Operating as Simpson Roberts, they created the Princes brand in 1900 (alongside Maypole in 1891 and Mikado in 1895). By 1915, Simpson Roberts was the world's largest lobster exporter, handling one-third of global trade. The company became Princes Foods in 1962 and expanded across Europe from 1960. Ownership changed through Bibby (1973 sale to Buitoni of Italy), Nestlé (acquired 1988), and Mitsubishi Corporation (acquired 1989). Under Mitsubishi, Princes became the UK's largest supplier of tinned food by 2013, acquiring Crosse & Blackwell and Farrow's brands in 2011. In 2024, Mitsubishi sold Princes to Italian company Newlat Food for £700 million, creating the NewPrinces Group. Princes operates tuna processing in Mauritius (established 1999) and achieved 100% MSC-certified sustainable sourcing for UK Princes-branded tuna. The product range includes canned tuna (chunks, flakes, steaks), salmon, mackerel, corned beef, ham, fruit (peaches, pears, mandarins, fruit cocktail), vegetables, pulses, and pie fillings. The Crosse & Blackwell brand covers baked beans and condiments. As part of NewPrinces Group, Princes joins a European network of over 30 brands and 23 production sites across six countries.
