About Schweppes
Schweppes is credited as the world's original carbonated soft drink, founded in 1783 when German watchmaker Johann Jacob Schweppe developed a process to manufacture bottled carbonated mineral water. Moving to London in 1792, Schweppe created the soft drink industry and invented a special bottle design that retained carbonation by keeping the cork moist when laid on its side. The brand's most famous innovation came when Schweppe added quinine to carbonated water, creating the world's first tonic water in 1871. Other landmark products include ginger ale (1870) and bitter lemon (1957). The company has held a British Royal Warrant since 1836—first granted by King William IV and later by Queen Victoria—a distinction maintained to this day. Schweppes was the official sponsor of Prince Albert's Great Exhibition at Hyde Park in 1851. After merging with Cadbury in 1969 to form Cadbury Schweppes, the company underwent various corporate changes before the brand came under Coca-Cola's stewardship in the UK. In 2017, Coca-Cola European Partners relaunched the brand with Schweppes 1783—a premium range featuring Crisp Tonic Water, Light Tonic Water, Golden Ginger Ale, Salty Lemon and Quenching Cucumber for the craft cocktail movement. Today's UK range includes Indian Tonic Water, Slimline Tonic, Ginger Ale, Bitter Lemon, Soda Water, Lemonade and the premium 1783 collection. As an iconic British brand with over 240 years of heritage, Schweppes remains the go-to mixer for G&Ts and cocktails.
