About Sudocrem
Sudocrem is a beloved healing cream developed in 1931 by Thomas Smith, a Professor of Pharmacy operating from his retail shop at 1 Old Cabra Road in North Dublin. Originally called "Smith's Cream", this Irish pharmaceutical treasure has grown to become the market-leading nappy rash treatment in the UK and Ireland, now available in over 50 countries worldwide. The distinctive name originated organically in the 1950s when the product was officially called "Soothing Cream". Dublin customers with characteristic North Dublin accents shortened the name when asking for it in shops, and "Sudocrem" stuck as the brand identity. This local pronunciation became the official name that parents across the world now trust. Thomas Smith's son Brendan pioneered an innovative marketing approach, checking newspaper birth announcements and personally delivering Sudocrem samples to Dublin's maternity hospitals. By the 1970s, word-of-mouth recommendations from satisfied mothers had established Sudocrem as a household staple across Ireland, before national distribution in Great Britain cemented its position as the UK's leading nappy rash treatment. Beyond nappy rash, Sudocrem's versatile healing formula treats eczema, pressure sores, incontinence rash, and various minor skin lesions. Now owned by pharmaceutical company Teva following their 2016 acquisition of Actavis, Sudocrem remains an essential item in family medicine cabinets, trusted by generations of parents for gentle, effective skin healing.
