About Theakston
T&R Theakston Ltd is an independent, family brewing company founded in 1827 in the Yorkshire Dales market town of Masham, North Yorkshire. Now approaching their 200th anniversary, the business has been passed down through six generations of the Theakston family, with direct descendants of founder Robert Theakston still at the helm. It is the second largest brewery under family ownership in Britain, after Shepherd Neame. The brewery's flagship beer, Old Peculier, is one of the country's most well-known and loved ales. This 5.6% ABV old ale has been brewed under this name since the early 1800s, earning affectionate nicknames like 'Yorkshire's Lunatic's Broth'. The beer is named after the Peculier of Masham, a peculier being a historic parish outside the jurisdiction of a diocese. Old Peculier is brewed using a generous blend of finest pale, crystal, and roasted barley with two bitter hops combined with the noble Fuggle hop, producing an awesome full-bodied flavour with subtle cherry and rich fruit overtones. It has won Champion Strong Ale of Britain (1989), silver at CAMRA's Champion Winter Beer of Britain (2000), and Champion of Champions at the Yorkshire Beer Championship (2007). Theakston is one of the few remaining UK breweries to have an in-house cooperage, with craftsman Euan Findlay making traditional oak casks.
