About Union Hand Roasted
Union Hand-Roasted Coffee is a pioneering British specialty coffee company founded in 2001 by Jeremy Torz and Steven Macatonia, headquartered in East London. The founders are credited with kickstarting the UK specialty coffee revolution, introducing concepts like direct trade, sustainability, and artisanal roasting that were virtually unknown in Britain at the time. Torz and Macatonia's coffee journey began at Peet's Coffee & Tea in San Francisco in the early 1990s, where they experienced a thriving coffee culture absent in the UK. In 1995, they became the main supplier for Seattle Coffee Company—the first major UK coffee chain—which later merged with Starbucks in 1998. They founded Union Coffee Roasters in 2001, rebranding to Union Hand-Roasted Coffee in 2007. All Union coffee is specialty grade and 100% Arabica, ethically sourced directly from smallholder farmers at fair, sustainable prices. Every batch is roasted by their award-winning roastmasters in small quantities at their East London facility, ensuring quality and freshness. The range includes single-origin coffees, signature blends like House Roast and Revelation, available as whole beans, ground, and capsules. Union Hand-Roasted Coffee is available at major UK supermarkets including Sainsbury's, Asda, and the Co-op, as well as direct from their roastery via unionroasted.com with freshly roasted-to-order options. The company remains a leader in ethical specialty coffee, maintaining the pioneering standards that transformed Britain's coffee culture.
