About Wahl
Wahl is the pioneering American grooming brand that invented the electromagnetic hair clipper in 1919. Founded by Leo J. Wahl in Sterling, Illinois, the company revolutionized hair cutting with the first practical electric clipper that had the motor built directly into the hand unit. Before Wahl's invention, electric clippers required a separate motor connected via a flexible shaft - his innovation made professional hair cutting faster and easier. Leo Wahl's journey began in 1911 when he invented a handheld massager with an electromagnetic motor as a high school student. His uncle marketed the massagers to doctors and barbershops. When his uncle was called into military service, Leo took over manufacturing and began developing what would become his signature invention. By the end of 1920, his factory was manufacturing and shipping clippers to barbers across America. The company has remained family-owned since Leo's passing in 1957, when he left his three sons a legacy of over 100 patents. Wahl continued innovating - introducing the first vacuum clipper in 1965 and the first cordless rechargeable clipper in 1966. Today, Wahl employs over 1,500 people worldwide at six manufacturing facilities and sells products in approximately 165 countries. UK supermarkets stock Wahl's consumer range including the popular Colour Pro clippers, multigroomers, beard trimmers, and shavers.
