About Wella
Wella is a global hair care brand founded in 1880 by German hairdresser Franz Ströher in Rothenkirchen, Saxony. Originally manufacturing tulle for wigs, the company pivoted to permanent wave equipment and hair care products as fashion evolved. The name 'Wella', meaning 'wave' in German, was trademarked in 1924 as the company established itself as a pioneer in professional hairdressing. From 1927, Wella began producing perm machines, hair dryers, and salon equipment, soon expanding into cosmetic hair products. The company's commitment to innovation led to the opening of the Wella Central Research Centre in Darmstadt, Germany in 1957. In 1950, Wella introduced Koleston, one of the first hair-colorant balms, famously featuring Elizabeth Taylor in advertising campaigns. Today, Wella operates in over 150 countries and manages a portfolio including Wella Professionals, ghd, OPI, Nioxin, Sebastian Professional, and Clairol. Since 2020, the company has operated independently under majority ownership by private equity firm KKR, following its separation from Coty Inc after previous ownership by Procter & Gamble. UK supermarkets stock Wella's consumer hair styling ranges including Silvikrin hairsprays for volumising and mega hold, Shockwaves styling products like mousse and gel stylers, Deluxe shine and repair treatments, and home hair colour kits.
