About Angostura
Angostura is the legendary bitters brand founded in 1824 by Dr. Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert, a German-born surgeon serving in Simón Bolívar's armies in Venezuela. Dr. Siegert originally created his aromatic bitters as a medicinal tincture to alleviate stomach ailments for soldiers, perfecting his secret formula of tropical herbs and plants after four years of research. Named after the Venezuelan town of Angostura (meaning 'narrow' in reference to the nearby Orinoco River), the bitters operation moved to Port of Spain, Trinidad in 1875, where the House of Angostura remains to this day. The brand celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2024, with the exact recipe still a closely guarded secret known to only one person at a time, passed down through generations. The iconic Angostura Aromatic Bitters is essential for classic cocktails including the Old Fashioned, Manhattan, and Pink Gin. The range has expanded to include Orange Bitters for citrus-forward drinks and Cocoa Bitters for chocolate and coffee-based cocktails, giving bartenders creative flexibility while maintaining the brand's legendary quality. Representing 8% of Trinidad and Tobago's food and beverage export value, Angostura remains one of the world's most recognisable bar ingredients.
