About Burgess
Burgess Pet Care is a family-owned British company with over 300 years of heritage, based in Yorkshire, England. The Burgess family started as flour millers in the 17th century in North Yorkshire, transitioned to producing farm animal feeds in the 1960s at Victory Mill in Thornton-le-Dale, and focused on small animal food from the 1980s at Cherry Tree Mill in East Yorkshire. The Burgess Excel range was one of the first premium foods established for small animals over 25 years ago. The brand is recommended by 92% of UK vets and has pioneered several innovations including the UK's first single-component nugget for rabbits (to prevent selective feeding) and the world's first food specifically formulated for indoor rabbits. Following University of Edinburgh research, Burgess stopped producing muesli-style diets in 2014 due to associated health risks. Burgess Excel produces food for rabbits (adult, junior, dwarf, mature, and indoor varieties), guinea pigs, chinchillas, rats, and ferrets. Their range includes nuggets, feeding hay, hay bales with flowers, and healthy treats. In 2021, Burgess launched the first-ever Guinea Pig Awareness Week (GPAW), endorsed by the British Veterinary Association and British Small Animal Veterinary Association. British shoppers can find Burgess Excel products at UK supermarkets including Ocado, Tesco, and Morrisons. The independent, family-run company continues to produce high-quality, award-winning pet foods, proudly made in Yorkshire.
